Adhibetur in synthesi intermediorum pro tincturis azoicis, tincturis sulphuris, chemicis gummi, et chemicis agriculturae; intermedia typica sunt o-toluidinum, o-nitrobenzaldehydum, 2-nitro-4-chlorotoluenum, 2-nitro-6-chlorotoluenum, 2-amino-4-chlorotoluenum (Basis Fast Scarlet TR), et 2-amino-6-chlorotoluenum (Basis Fast Red KB). 2-Nitrotoluenum adhibetur ut intermedium pro synthesi o-toludini, quod applicationem invenit in industria tincturarum. Adhibetur ut reagens in detegendis et photometricis determinandis agentibus oxidantibus. Etiam adhibetur in determinatione contenti acidi prussici in aere.
